and they don't have proper training.

I seriously doubt it. The Presidential Selective Recall that brought many National Guard forces onto active duty expired in 2003. Since then, most deployment requirements are being filled by active duty forces. In fact, forces from other services are being used to perform Army missions in lieu of activating additional National Guard forces.

I've been working with both National Guard and Active Duty troops for about 25 years. In my experience, most National Guard troops are very well trained and equipped. Many were once on active duty, then after separation joined the Guard due to their continuing affinity to the service.

It has more to do with demgraphics of where soldiers are stationed and the level of hostilities at the time.

I was here in Iraq in '03 and my level of training was not as near as good as it is today. There is a lot more focus on survival and weapons handling in bootcamp than when I went in the '80's.

Our soldiers are better prepared although circumstance still leaves them vulnerable to road-side bomb attacks.

The sophistication of bomb finding material has grown exponentially since the outset of this war, and has saved a lot of lives. Sadly, no science is perfect.

The media only mentions casually, the exsistance of an Iraqi Police force and an Army, but the truth is they are out there and they are doing a real good job. They can't just pack up and go home. With or without US presence, they have to make this struggling democracy work. For us to abandon them now only leaves a vacuum that can only be filled by yet another Taliban regime for us to remove, Muslim extremists declaring victory over the US and the same abondonment felt by them following the Persian Gulf war in '91. (When we failed to follow through on ousting Saddam Hussein).

The sacrifice of those that have died will have been in vain if we don't make this work. There is no quick-fix here. Sorry.

No way. The United States Millitary has the most well trained soldiers in the world and most disciplined since the Roman Legions. Of course, it does depend on the person but the MIllitary does not slack when it comes to training.

i don't know the exact statistics, but i know plenty of not-national guard who have been killed, so i doubt that there is that large of a gap. national guard should all be properly trained in bootcamp. furthermore, they attend a mandatory training period to refresh them before deploying. however, they do not have the opportunity to train every day as regular military do, so their skills are naturally not as honed.

National guard or not it is always better to defend ones homeland ,and not as easy to fight a war on someone else's soil.Everyone loves their own country.
