We can't even get to religion when looking at the diversity of government - there are so many OTHER appalling statistics that stop us before we get there. Women make up over half of the country's population, yet ONE woman sits on the Supreme Court and less than 20% of women hold seats in the Senate and House. I have no idea what the breakdown is of other minorities, but I expect it's just as deplorable.

Though I concur with you - I guarantee you there's not a single Pagan or Wiccan in Washington, and if there are, they are deeply, DEEPLY closeted.

Blessed be.

Diversity is defined as the presence of distinct from one another. The question wheter there is diversity in government can be proven by looking at the distinctiveness of the group - and the reality is it is not really that diverse. But who is to blame? None, because that is how a liberal democracy works. Elected offcials are vested constitutional powers by the people they represent through election, and during election, the electorate does not think about diversity but platforms.

I suspect that there are more atheists in office than are admitting it publicly, but I'm not really concerned about whether a person is an atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Wiccan, or whatever. What I hope for are more people in office who will defend the cherished American tradition of freedom of religion. A good atheist would make sure his Christian and Muslim constituents are represented fairly, just as a good Christian would not ignore the rights of her non-Christian constituents. This is not just idealism. Isn't it false to believe that a man cannot represent the interests of women, or women men?
