No one right on its mind will use first Nukes. You will be the paria of the whole world and loose all allies. Nukes will be used when one party is completly lost.
A ground war with China would look as the war in Russia. Very long distance to conquer (even worse since you must bring everything by sea).
All Chinese have a minimum military training. When fully mobilising they have more soldiers than the entire population of the US.
In Korea, Us had a lot of trouble with the Chinese which were badly underarmed. The modern Chinese army has very good material and even more troops than in 1950.
Carpet bombing has someone suggested : China is even larger than the US. Do you think the Chinese army and factories will stay in the towns ? Think again.

So how would look a war with China really ?
Simply : a lot of naval raids on the Chinese coast, Taiwan taken by the Chinese after a heavy sea battle (with a lot of combats between Chinese airforce versus US navy carriers).
An invasion of China is very unlikely because no way you can stop the millions of Chinese (well trained and motivated).
At the other hand China can not do much to arm the US and will be cut off from the world for trade so no more export (and so no more currency coming in).
China will fall back on it own (like in 1960), the US will be seriously crippled after the first months of battle and can not affort to have a second front somewhere.

All depends what other countries will do especially Russia, India.

Conclusion : both countries have no interest to start a war with each other. Military it would make the US vulnerable, China would loose a lot economical.

The most likely scenario for a US/China war would be an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Since there would be no need for us to fight on the ground in China to defend Taiwan - this would be a war fought by the US Navy and Air Force. US Army/Marine involvement would be minimal (mostly defensive missile batteries in Taiwan.)

On the nuclear side - China would have the problem of getting a missile through our missile defenses. Their only real hope for doing this would require them to launch every missile they have - which would leave them disarmed and at the mercy of the US. (Who would demand unconditional surrender - 'or else.') As a result I doubt that the Chinese would desire national suicide by using nukes.

I don't think China will ever enter a major war. Just by looking at the number of chinese people in all other contries worldwide, if a war was to start, the whole world will come to a standstill.

The sad news is China can deliver a nuclear blow, as well as, a man power blitz. In October 1950, China entered the Korea war and kicked our butts. They dared us to drop the atomic bombs on them. They knew their population was so large that for us to be able to put a dent in it would have caused so much atomic energy to have been expended the world as we knew it would have ceased to exist. Well, they have even more people now; we would have a hard time using nukes on North Korea, as due to their proximity to South Koreas we would be killing an ally.

The Army War College; Jane's and all the think tanks agree we could not beat China and there is a 84% possibility that North Korea could also beat us.

God Bless You and The Southern People.

I saw an interview way back in the 80's with the head of the Chinese military. He openly stated that if war broke out with the US they would us all weps to quickly defeat us. He said they have nukes, bio and chemical stuff and would use it all without hesitation.

Think massive nuclear war with China, both sides lose 150 million people. USA badly smashed, China cheering the decrease in surplus population

Ten years ago a major official in the chinese government warned our secretary of state that, if the US interfered with their policy on Taiwan that the chinese would attack the US with nuclear weapons and were willing to accept the destruction of every city in their country and the death of most of its civilian population as a consequence of that war.

Make no mistake. The chinese are nucking futz. OFFICIAL policy in the US with regard to this matter is to try and turn the chinese into people who aren't completely insane and who can be reasoned with so as not to have a nuclear war killing billions. It's been official policy since Nixon and colors every single interaction we have with them.

Now China has very few missiles that can reach US:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/china/icbm.htm
They can do severe damage, but not destroy US.
In the other hand, US can completely destroy China with nukes.

In the nonnuclear war nor US nor China would win. China can't invade US because they has very weak navy. US can't invade China because of
chinese huge army and population.

days and days of massive carpet bombing...wouldnt take long.
Besides, 90% of Chinese people live in clusters anyway...just carpet bombing at 40,000 feet...is all we'd need to do.
