All muscles function by neurons (nervous system). Some muscles are voluntarily moved (skeletal) such as your arms and legs. Other muscles are involuntarily moved and are control by your neurological system such as the heart, liver, digestive tract and other internal organs.

kinda long answer but here goes.

muscles are composed of basic units called sarcomeres.
sarcomeres have filaments in them. they won't contract unless calcium ions are present to change the shape of this one kind of filament so that the other kind of filament slides along the first one. this contracts the sarcomere. not just one sarcomere contracts coz when you want a muscle to contract, the nerve endings that signal this contraction tells the entire muscle to contract, not just one sarcomere.

to make it short: nerve signal makes calcium pumps pump out calcium ions. calcium ions change the shape of one filament. the second filament can now slide along the first filament. muscle contracts.

energy is also require for the filaments to slide along. so you need food for energy.
