Are you in the UK? If so USA laws will not matter. The general notion is that default stays for years, and even a small one can put your rating into the bin.
Now, the best way is to work to get them cleared, after the applicable time lapse has occurred, or paying off and asking for a clearance off your record.
Good luck, one bad spot buggered an elderly friend for years, until he traced it down and paid up about £450. Then he had to write letters and present cheque copy. His ex wife had did the dirt, he didn't even know!

golferwhoworks is totally wrong, along with most of the rest. I don't know why these people can't do a minutes worth of research before trying to answer these questions. I've only posted this same exact answer dozens of times here already.

OK, once again, everyone please open your textbooks to the Fair Credit Reporting Act Section 605(c)(1)....

If a creditor were to re-list a debt (like golferwhoworks claims) they will be "re-aging" the debt, which is in violation of the FCRA and they can be fined $1000 for each instance.

7 years except for chapter 7 bankruptcy, which is 10 years.

If you want to remove the default, dispute it with the bureaus a few times, eventually the creditor will not verify it and it will be gone.

Nowadays, it tends to stay on for three years. Times can vary though so beware

7 years but it can remain for many years as the collection companies keep selling the account to each other so they can post for many years.
