Cats are easily entertained. They don't know how much anything costs, so they will only go after what they enjoy. Usually that's string tied at the end of a stick (I also attach a toy they enjoy at the end of the string so it's a more interactive toy).

A $20 toy could be more expensive, but doens't include what cats enjoy playing with, so obviously they won't play with it.

Cats are very independent and they will play with something like a plastic cap rather than a brand new toy. Cats don't know about prices they just go by what interests them the most.

I agree with Moglie....cats will play with the simplest toys just as children do. My kids played with my pots and pans more than all the expensive toys I bought them. The same with my cats...they like Q-tips, twist ties, crunchy paper. And then whenever I buy them all those little mice, they hide them from me!!!!! So I have to buy more!

Maybe they think string is more fun. I know that my cats would prefer a milk jug ring or a shoe lace over an expensive toy any day.

Because they are cats and you don't need to spend a fortune of money on toys on they just a crumbled piece of paper and they are fine with that
thank you

its common sense. Its like buying children expensive toys and they like the box the gifts came in. Buy your cats catnip toys. ones made by zoomaroundtheroom are best.

We just got a second cat, and my first cat thinks it's great...she didn't think so until new cat's colar went on her...because it has a bell on it. Now old cat has a new toy to play with.

same reason that kids will end up playing with the box the toy came in on Xmas day after opening all their gifts. They play with what amuses them at the moment

Depends on what it smells like and if it is poofy or swishy. Cats like things that tickle. :) OH and noisy things like bells. The smell of new stuff from the store is nothing compared to the 'home sweet home' smell or catnip.
