"we should just be friends" means exactly that. Most likely you guys knew each other before you started dating. That means you guys know a lot of the same people and/or hang out at a lot of the same places.
If you guys remain friends after breaking up, nobody has to choose which one of you they would rather hang out with. There are no awkward moments when you guys run into each other. Its just easier to stay friends.
It just means you guys tried it together and it didn't work, it shouldn't force you two never to hang out together again.

It means that after she leaves you she doesn't want to lose you out of her sight she wants to always have you there which comes the phrase can we be just friends, when we both know full well if you love her she just ripped you heart out it is impossible to be friends right away! There a very few men who can do that and that is real, and the ones that can they have lined up a plan B for the occasion, so they know just how to deal with it. I'm not saying that this is a good thing but if keeps them from feeling the pain that doesn't go away for a long time. So take my advice have a plan B since she wants to be just friends. And also if she comes at you with what's up with the other girl, well tell her why is she worried about it and you told me you wanted me to be just a friend remember it was your call....Trust me she will regret it Sorry it sounds so mean but I don't like it when girls do that if you break up then just say you did and no friendship after that period.

Depends on the chick. When i say it, i mean it. I'm a very nice person and if a person likes me enough, they should want to too. The should consider that i could have made the break up a lot more painful. But,
Most chicks just say it to get them out of their faces.

Some people can get along great as friends after a relationship has ended and it could be good if you think you can see this person as a friend only but it may be hard for you as you may want more from your relationship than she does.

Dont fall for it....!!! they still want you as a back up / offload there emotional crap onto you... ave just tried stayin friends with my ex (for 2 months) didnt work out, i just felt worse...
Maybe when the hurt and feelings have gone try being friends then, as relationships are supposed to be built on friendship neway etc... etc....

I was going to break up with my EX because I HAD to. . . I was gonna say that and I ment it it just depends on the girl. . . I think that I am friends with all my ex except one and that because even though he broke up with me he wants to still have sex and not the commitment and I am not about to do that. . .
