Our camera's autofocus never seems to work, and it takes - FOREVER - to snap a picture after a previous picture even when the battery is fully charged. Is this a sign that our rechargable battery should be replaced, or is it a sign of something else.
(I spose I can spend $10 on a new battery to test, but looking for opinions first)

There are a combination of problems here.
1) if there is a problem with the auto-focus it is possible that you are not using the system properly. make sure that the focus frame is fully centred on the subject before taking the shot to see if this improves the outcome.
2) if the camera is taking a long time to take the photo try reducing the image quality or change the image format to see if this helps.
3) if the battery is no good you will find that you will not get many photos before your battery starts to run flat. then you buy a new one. If you buy a new battery you should charge it for 24 hours (regardless of manufacturers requirement to charge) then use it until it runs completely flat, recharge for 24 hours again for the next 2 charges then use as normal as this maximises the life of your battery.

It has nothing to do with the battery, Seems to me that the one with the problem is you camera, How old is it?

Maybe it's time to replace the camera.

And Iff your camera never focus right, than you have an Auto Focus Problem. If the camera is new ans still under the manufactorer warranty, you have to take it back and get it replaced. If it's not under any warranty, just get a new camera.
