My German Shepherd Mix, Spooky, (she is about 2 years old) She lives at my uncles house, I visit her all the time, but I cannot get her to stay at my uncles. She has lived with my uncle for about 1 year now. Before that she lived with one of my neighbors. She is just now starting to wander all over town, the only way I can think of to keep her home is to chain her up, but i can't do that ALL of the time. I also can't lock her in a kennel all day and all night. So is there any way to teach her to stay home?

Please don't post if your going to post rude remarks!

Thanks!

We can't fence in the place because it is a huge farm.

She is my dog because I am always down at my uncles, we can't fence in the place because it is a really big farm, and yes she is loved and cared for.

You can actually buy an electric fence that doesn't need to be "installed" permanently. It's actually something kept in the house (or wherever would be best in your situation) and it does a radius around the receiver.

If you are going to keep her outside, ensure she has a suitable fence. I am not a fan of the electric fence, but if nothing else, this should help. You will probably categorize this as a rude remark, but its actually just the truth...If you do not have a suitable home for a dog, you should not have a dog. She is probably wandering, because she is bored and has nothing better to do. Does anybody play with her, love her, spend time with her, exercise her? Dogs are destructive, or in your case absent, because of lack of attention and exercise. What would you do if you were left alone outside all day and night?

You don't have to fence in the whole farm, just do a kennel area. Or buy a leash and keep her tethered. And yes, you CAN do it all the time, responsible owners have their dogs contained, ALL the time. You can take her for walks and still spend time with her.

I HATE roaming dogs, they are nothing but trouble! I am sick and tired of strange dogs charging us when we are walking. You have NO IDEA if my dogs are friendly! I carry pepper spray and will use it if a dog does not back off!

BTW, if your roaming dog gets in a fight with a leashed dog, you can be sued and your dog can be put down.

I would say fence in the whole yard or use a dog runner that would be strong enough for a shepard mix. I had the same problem with my rottweiler. I had to deal with regulations and such that did not alow me to have it in a kennel or use a runner, we just had to fence in the yard even though we were renting.

How can the dog consider you as its owner if it never lives with you? You can purchase a large Kennel run. Part of your yard. no ones said you need to fence in the whole farm....

I can't think of any way to get a dog to stay home who is not enclosed. I can understand your wanting her to, but it's really just not realistic.
