I recently got a long haired kitten, he is about 8-9 weeks old. I have noticed that when he uses the litter box he often messes on the long hair on his legs and needs his bottom cleaned often. I would like to know if you have had the same problem and if you think I can expect him to out grow this problem or is it something that I'll need to learn to live with?

Also, how often should I brush him (as he gets older)? Right now his hair is like fluff and I have to brush him a couple times a day to prevent tangles.

I've always had short haired cats before. So any advise for long haired cats is welcome. Thanks :-D

first of all, I have 3 long haired cats, and I trim the long hair real short around the bottom.. that pretty much takes care of that problem.. Then as for the brushing, your going to have to keep brushing them at least once a day to twice a day.. They are work but well worth it and very pretty cats..

My long haired cat has problems with this once in a while. I don't think it will be an ongoing problem, but I do try to trim her hair shorter on her behind. And start brushing her now so she gets used to it. I got my cat from a shelter when she was 3, and she was never brushed and she hates it. I brush as much as she will tolerate, but it's never enough.

I used to own a long-haired cat and I had that problem too. I would usually trim the hair around her bum and that seemed to really work. Also, a dry diet would be better for your cat because then the poop won't be so runny and less sticky. MAKE SURE you brush the cat at least once a day, because the undercoat will get very knotted and end up pulling on the cat's skin. This happened to my cat and she was very uncomfortable...I used to have to cut them out and it wasn't a very enjoyable process for me or the cat.

I have a 15 year old persian and the problem you are experiencing is very normal. I would recommend getting the hair on the back of his legs trimmed. That should fix the problem. Regarding the brushing...as often as he will let you (my kitty HATES to be brushed)!

I have had Persians my entire life. Some will outgrow this and some won't. Just trim the hair in that area very short. Long haired cats need to be brushed daily or their fur will knot up horribly. Part of the problem may be him just adjusting to his food. Once he does, his stool should harden up and won't be as messy. I hope this helps. Cheers!

He should be cleaning himself by now. His stools shouldn't be messy, you may want to switch his diet. I recommend just regular Purina Kitten Chow. If you're giving him soft food, that's why his bm is all runny and gets on him. I'd brush him once a day. I had 1 longhair cat who died last year at the very ripe age of 19. I will never ever have a long haired cat. He was an outdoor cat and hated to be brushed. We had to resort to taking him to a groomer and giving him a funny looking hair cut to prevent tangles. It was a nightmare. You may have to do this. You leave the fur on his head and just leave a bit on the end of his tail like a lion. GOOD LUCK.

Don't worry! That used to happen to my cat too. Now she is 7 months old and that hasn't happened for a while. I would reccomend waiting for it to dry and then combing it out. You should probably brush him once a day, everyday but if you find that its getting really tangled then probably twice a day. I perfer long- haired cats because they feel much softer that short- haired cats! It's worth it. Trust me. Good Luck!

you should take the cat to a groomer and have the back end clipped short..it might be a good idea also to have the legs trimmed up as well..foxi
