Because in a dream we tend to be focussed on one thing at once whereas in real life we rarely have that luxury

I'm not entirely sure, but I would guess because your mind isn't splitting attention between two things when you are asleep. When you are awake, at least a small part of your attention will always be on what's around you; some part of your conscious is making sure you are safe and at least partially aware. But when you are asleep, your eyes are closed and cannot see anything in front of them (and therefore there is nothing to distract the mind at all), and so all the attention is focused on the dream, thus making it more vivid than in your "waking dream" of your imagination.
