A friend of mine asked me this question. We're frm S'pore. As in most countries, suicide is considered to be a crime. So she heard that police here would put handcuffs on the corpse of a person whom committed suicide. Is this practiced in other countries and why? What's the rationale?

There is no law or procedure in Singapore that requires the police to handcuff the corpse of an offender. The story you and your friend have heard is an urban legend that has been making its way around Singapore for many years.

No, law enforcement doesnt handcuff a corpse. It is possible that she got the idea from the fact that in some circumstances, when the suicide or death has just occured, and there was a weapon present, law enforcement will briefly handcuff as a safety precaution. You've seen it when someone has fled from the police, been involved in an accident and the police put the handcuffs on them even if they arent moving.

This is not normally done. The only exception I can think of, is I read somewhere (sorryI cant remember the source) with some deaths of serial killers, etc...it is customary to handcuff the hands and feet. Not because they actually except the corpse to come to life, but it's just done.

The only time that happens is when the person is dangerous and has life threatening injuries, even when they are unconscious. If they die in cuffs, they don't remove them. Other than that restraining a corpse sounds like an urban myth.

Honestly, there is no rationale, and I have never heard of such a thing. If the person is dead, handcuffs are ridiculous. It's not like they will be escaping!

Only a moron would handcuff a corpse. It would have nothing to do with where that moron might live.
