When the US speaks of "training" the Iraqis to become policemen or as part of the military, do they train them in the same way as the US trains police/military here? And if so, are there any high ranking Iraqi police/military people in charge of training also.?From what we have heard, the Iraqi police/military were very effective under Saddam. They had their own tractics to deal with their own people.Importing democracy is one thing; importing US-based law iand order s still another

The Iraqi army and police forces had to be rebuilt completely and from scratch. The Saddam-era leadership was corrupt, incompetent and loyal only to Saddam.

Training of the Iraqi police has been conducted primarily by US and Jordan. And they are being trained to Western standards.

I don't know what makes you think that the Saddam era police and military were 'effective.' They existed only to maintain Saddam in power and their law-enforcement role was so diluted by corruption that there was no real 'law and order' from a civil point of view.

And we are not importing 'US-based' law and order. We are importing Western based standards for competence and honesty. The laws that the police enforce are all set by the elected Iraqi Parliament.

You are aware that the Iraqi people voted in a constitutional democracy over a year ago - right?
