The LA area is about the size of Connecticut. The areas I name are all good places to stay. I would pick one of them and stick with it or maybe venture into no more than one other area.
That being said - I'd Pick Santa Monica as my top recommendation for you. It is on the ocean, close to airport and there is lots of Shopping. You won't be able to miss the 3rd avenue promenade - it is about 4 to 5 blocks of shops in a no car zone. Lots of shops and restaurants. A few malls.
In no order, you could also consider Malibu, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Century City, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Glendale or Pasadena. These cities all have good shopping and are kind of nice to stroll around in.

There is a famous mall called, "The Beverly Center," which is located near Rodeo Drive in Bevery Hills. You didn't state if you were looking for expensive shopping, but if so check out Beverly Hills.
I also agree with the above answer, Santa Monica, might be better, as it is closer to the airport, and the Promenade is a cool outdoor shopping mall, Yet, if you have an expensive type mall in your area, you might notice they have probably similar shops.
But if you're talking really close to the airport, then I can't reccomend anything as I call that area the boondocks. The southbay area, (Torrance, Redondo beach) I think is boring, and their stores I don't think are that great.
For more unique,, shopping, try Venice Beach, (you can buy t-shirts for cheap, but it has kind of a funky atmosphere that makes some small town people uncomfortable), Amoeba Records (has a huge collection of rare and popular used and new CDs and DVDs) in Hollywood.
You didn't specify what you were looking to buy here, so I can't really help you further.

I live in L.A. and in the same neighborhood. It doesn't get to cold around here during the winter so there really isn't much to worry about regarding the cold. i suggest that you bring pants, t-shirts, a sweater, and maybe some shorts because the weather tends to change time after time. one day it might be scorching hot and the next will be cold. You will have a lot of fun. You should check out the Grove, La brea tar pits...

For shopping you could go the bizarre "Babylon Court" on Hollywood Blvd. near Highland Ave. -- a reasonable range of shops (though none of them are cheap) plus all the crazy Hollywoodness.
