One of the most common injuries for the elderly is a broken hip from a fall, but they are rarely fatal. The broken bone is because the bones are not as dense and far more brittle than when they were younger. I have responded to many hip injury calls and I still see many of those old folks around every day. Because the hip and femur are such large bones, a break effects production of blood and the body's ability to fight off infections. Many times if the elderly do not have proper after care from the hip injury, that is where the problems lie. As several mentioned, they are frequently no longer able to get up and around on their own and this will only contribute to their declining health. If you have a loved one that has broken a hip, you need to keep the active within what the doctor says they are able to do and not let them just quit on themselves. Wanting to live and having a reason to want to live has as much to do with the recovery as any kind of good medicine in a case like that.

I'm not sure where you obtain your info but hip replacement within the elderly community is frequent and safe. Though, some deaths do occur but it's not related to hip replacement. It's related to surgery. Hip surgeries are the most frequent surgeries required which may lead to your belief.

You have to consider the functions of the body's organs as we age. Everything is older and more fragile which means being more careful when repairing damage. The heart is the number one failure in surgeries due to it's age and weakness. This is the reason why any deaths or complication may occur during those surgeries.

When elderly people break their hip it is a VERY serious, life altering injury. It is very difficult to break the hip in only one place, many times it is fractured in more than one. It is a painful injury which produces very limited mobility.
Elderly patients who don't get around much at all are prone to many things, the most serious of which are depression (from a decrease in their quality of life) and respiratory illnesses (due to inability to effectively cough out sputum, having been bedridden. Infection sets into the lungs and it is VERY difficult for elderly people to fight these infections with their weakened immune systems.

Two cases: My father aged 72 fell on a plastic bag that had been carelessly discarded on the street and broke his hip. He was given a hip replacement and was up and walking around the hospital ward in three days.
But my great uncle who was aged 96 (who went into hospital due to poor health) slipped in a hospital ward and broke his hip and died due to pneumonia setting in.
Guess it is all due to how old is old and state of health when it happens.

It doesn't. Many many elderly people recover from hip surgery. But it does mean complications often due to being bed-ridden, maybe moved into a nursing home while they recover ,etc. and, yes, bones are more fragile when one gets elderly...

An elderly persons bones takes longer to heal. When my grandmom broke her hip she was bedridden and could no longer to anything for herself. She already had lung disease, so she was even more prone to getting phenomena, which eventually killed her.

Having a broken hip means they have to lie flat on their backs, which is horrible for postural drainage, and they wind up developing pneumonia, which is what kills them.

If they are off their feet for an extended period, they can get bed sores, infections, pnemonia, and things just spiral down hill.
