My 10 year old son would like to wrestle this winter at school. We were going to let him until we started talking to a wrestling coach. Now we are not so sure if wrestling would be good for him.
Our concerns are we don't want him to have to start worrying about making weight. I think 10 years old is way to young for kids to start worrying about what they weigh. If the child is healthy and active, then that is all they should care about.
The other concern we have is because of how big our child is, he would have to wrestle against more mature boys. Our son is 10.5 years old and is 5'2 and weighs about 140. He wears a size 12 in mens shoes. He's a monster for his age.
We don't think it is fare he wrestle against smaller kids but it's also not fare that he would also have to wrestle against kids that are in middle school and physically more mature.
If this were your son, would you allow him to wrestle or would you encourage baseketball instead?

My son is involved in other activties. He is a star center in football, he does 4-H and barrel racing.
The only wrestling program the school offers is based on weight. If the kids want to wrestle, they have to weigh a specific weight. If they are over it, they don't get to wrestle.

If this were my son, i'd let him wrestle. But he's your son, so you make the final desicion. At this young age, they should not be encouraging cutting weight. It's more about learning the basic moves and having fun.

I would let him wrestle and see what happens. Kids don't show interest in much, so you should support his interests when they come up. I would simply explain to his wrestling coach that weight is NOT to be an issue. At that age, your son will be growing (more!) anyway and his weight will change. There are also other kids out there in the same boat - big for their age. He will find similar opponents. If not, he'll adjust.

Imagine all the kids who have been through this same thing - the vast majority have turned out just fine. Let him get involved!

Yes, let him wrestle, and encourage him to get involved in other activities. He may not be able to beat the older, more mature kids he's wrestling, but, it will encourage your son to work harder, and get a little more aggressive towards what he's doing. After getting beat a few times, he will start working out and making a great effort, to beat them next time. Get him going, and be very supportive with the activities, he wants to do.......ps... size doesn't matter, its the effort that counts.

I would let him try wrestling. A good wrestling program for kids that age will not require him to cut weight. It's not healthy for kids who are still growing, and they know that. Yes, he will have to wrestle older kids, but there might be kids in your son's weight class who are close to his age, or are not very experienced. Wrestling is a tough sport, but if your son really wants to do it, I would let him try it. He may love it, and if not, there's always basketball next year.

My brother started wrestling in Jr high, and they were not all abotu making a weight class- I think that happens later in high school. He told me that they even had a weight allowance after the Thanksgiving holiday because they expected kids to have put on weight and they did not want it to affect their weight classes. Bottom line, you know your kid. As long as you stay involved and are aware, it should be fine. If you notice him skipping meals or dropping weight- you cut it off. But if he is interested, let him do it.
