Sometimes the patriotic cant coming from US TV reminds me of the jingoistic propoganda that was rife during the days of the British Empire. Does every nation that becomes powerful get a superiority complex and try to gain territory and control the world?

We most certainly ARE. Watch the BBC documentary on Google video "The Century of Self." It explores the work of Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, and clearly demonstrates that we are, out of necessity, brainwashed. Were we not, we would succumb to our latent "libidinal forces" and be a lot less likely to support the power elite.

I guess I would have say to say yes, a lot of people are brainwashed. The best evidence of that is YOU, pal. You listen to the left-wing bilge that pours forth from your tv or some goofy professor and take it as gospel. Just a little effort on your part would tell you a different story. If what you say is true, we would be rulers of Gernany, Japan, Panama, Granada, Philipines, etc., etc.. These are all countries that we have defeated over time. And why in the hell would we stop there? There are so many defenseless countries in the world. We should be out there expanding our empire. Just think of all the riches we could accumulate. I mean really, has there ever been, in the history of the world, one nation more able to expand its territory? We can go anywhere with overwhelming force. Is there any doubt in your mind that if we wanted to we could take over Iraq? We haven't used a fraction of the resources available. Sure there would be a lot of innocent people killed, but then, an evil empire doesn't let something like that stand in the way. But no, instead we shed our blood in the hopes that the Iraqi people will be able to create a government that protects the rights of every citizen. Don't you feel strange taking the side of Saddam Hussein, who killed hundreds of thousands of his own people, or Kim Jong, who allowed a million of his people to strarve so he could keep the army that protects his fat *** well fed? Is that the kind of world you want to live in?The problem with boneheads like you is that you confuse fighting evil or helping our friends with some sort of design on global domination. The world should thank God everyday that we are so benevolent and that we use our power to try to ensure that, someday, every human being can live in freedom and liberty. Even dumbasses like you.

We are not trying to control the world, our government isn't doing all of the brainwashing around the world, our corporations are.

Capitalism and consumerism is what is controlling society.-- And YOU have the choice to be a customer.
I think your media is slanted against Americans, and only show the deep south or midwest patriotic people who usually join the military...
IT's their way of poking a bit of fun at us, 'look at the idiotic Americans saluting their flag and saying "our country is the best in the world!"'.
Of course some Americans are like that, but how could they help it when we DO have a lot of say, control and influence! What are they supposed to do, say : "our country sucks", how would we have a military without patriotism? Why have children if your not proud, loving life, living in peace and trusting your country...?

Ask yourself that as your United Kingdom is slipping away by the minute.

Which country would you rather be in??? You don't see boat loads of Americans trying to get to Cuba. You don't see Americans trying to hop the fence or paying someone to get smuggled across the border to Mexico.
Americans have a standard of life that our politicians are trying to protect. If they didn't protect that way then you would be whining and crying along with most of the population. Americans cry when there pizza is not at their door in 1/2hr.
Yeah some countries hate America but most countries are trying to be like America.
Before Americans complain about America, they should travel overseas and visit other countries to really see how good you have it.

Seems you might be buying into a sterotype. Keep in mind that people are people, no matter where you go. Governments are theoretically made up of the people or citizens of a particular country. It seems more and more likely that the interests of the people are not represented by their leader in pretty much any country one might mention these days. Do I hate Iran? No, I don't. Their leaders are not among my favorite people but the citizens are much the same as you or me, they want to live a decent life, free of worry, feed their children, pursue their dreams just like anyone. Don't mistake the posture of the leader for the mindset of the people he/she represents. Cheers. :)

As you see by the negative responses, your ideas and inputs doesnt matter. Really i wonder sometimes if Americans are brainwashed. But the thing is that most people dont care for politics, or anything else because by documentaries and elsewhere, we realize that the government is corrupt. What is corrupt? Is corrupt truly corrupt and wrong? have we truly lost our morals? or is it the natural instinct of mankind to rule? let the people of the world decide that. Once they find out that the US will be at war with the world.

God Bless America. I am glad for patriotism for this country. We should be proud to be Americans. But in the same token it kinda irked me that many people didn't show this until after 9/11.

We are not looking for your territory nor are we trying to control the world. We are simply protecting our country by taking the fight to you. Now go pound sand.

To paraphrase General Colin Powell:

"The only foreign land America seeks is to bury her fallen soldiers"

The USA is not an empire.
