I know friends who leave butter on a butter plate in a cabinet instead of in the fridge. Is that okay? Will the butter spoil or make someone sick who eats it?

If it is salted butter, it will be fine, if used within a reasonable time & you keep it covered. Unsalted butter can NOT be left outside the frige, even covered.
I leave mine in a covered dish, most of the year. All but the hottest months! Then, it melts as I don't have central air!

As long as the temperature in the home is kinda cool and the butter is covered, it can stay out for a few hours.

A lot depends on the temperature it is left out in, however, It will still go bad eventually. Butter is a fat, and fats get rancid.

keep it cool and covered and it OK for awhile. eat it up soon. I know it gets too hard to spread if left in frig. humans have eaten usch stored butter for many thousands of years so we can handle it.
( all the people that could not died in the middle ages apparently)

If it's well closed in a container and kept in a fresh shaded place it could conserve and keep soft.
