I would suggest placing your iTunes library in a shared location then use two different user accounts to access that same library. This way, the entire library is available to the both of you, yet each of you will be able to customize your playlists and such.

i think of you are able to differentiate units once you connect them to the laptop. you are able to create separate playlists and replace your nano inclusive of your playlist and the different one with a distinctive playlist. There would not look any profiles characteristic accessible in itunes.
