as far as religion goes,jesus was the only believable part of it,he was an agitator that rocked the then political boat,crucifiction was the prefered method in those days,nowadays its called assasination.

It's to set examples. Plant fears into the mind of the people so they wouldn't rebel or attempt to do anything else.
The cross wasn't something holy before Jesus died. It was a symbol of fear.
