I don't work so I'm always around to housebreak my Sheltie puppies. The 6 month female is preety much housebroken but the 4 month old male still has accidents. I heard about puppy pads, they sell like a kit at Petco or Foster and Smith.Com. I think they explain how you use them. I didn't want to use them because I didn't want them to think it was okay to go inside even if on a "piddle pad" or whatever they're called. However, in your case, since you work, this may be a good option. You might also want to think about getting another puppy or a kitten to keep it company. I feel bad for puppies being alone all day. If you don't, make sure you leave the TV on (my pups watch Animal Planet and Nick Jr.). My puppies sleep only in their crates at night. They cried when they had to go to the bathroom at first because they couldn't hold it all night. They even had a few accidents in there though. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND LEAVING YOUR DOG IN A CRATE ALL DAY. I know tons of people that do this and their dogs are very well trained and behaved but they seriously look depressed. Section off a puppy proofed area of your house or apt. and leave the crate open so he can go in there if he want to. So, you need a crate (get one that will be big enough for him to move around in when he's older) and I recommend the soft kind (check Foster and Smith.Com) and lots of toys, food (I recommend Science Diet or Iams), several books on dog care/training and Lhaso Apsos, and $ for his puppy vet shots and inital consultation which is costly. Also, don't forget about a possible companion. And remember toy breeds don't have the greatest bladder control so be patient! Never shout or even lightly hit him which I'm sure you know. I also definitely recommend puppy kindergarten which is so much fun and helpful. I don't like clicker training, I'd stay away from those classes. I hope I helped you out somewhat. Good luck. Lhaso Apsos are cute little dogs!

Hi Venza
Congrats on the new pup, how exciting, If you haven't had a dog before then there are lots of good books out there. There is 'Dummies Guide to puppies' Also my favourite would be a couple of books by John Richardson, he trains dogs through a company called Dogtech.
His book, I would recommend as they are sitting on my bookshelf and have been well read. It is 'The Dog Whisperer'. Good luck and congrats once again.
Tam PS We have a gorgeous beagle in our family.

Check out some great dog books at your local library. They will have much better information on dog traning. Also, if you're leaving the pup in a crate for hours in end, see if you can hire someone to walk him daily, otherwise he will be very skittish and run through the house and may pee on a lot of things if upset.

If you live in an apartment make sure that he's allowed in.

Oh, goodness, there is SO much you need to know before you bring your pup home. I highly recommend the book Before and After Getting Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar. It is fairly short and easy to read. Ian is pretty much the guru of modern-day pet dog training. You can't go wrong if you follow his advice.

oh dear. You will not be able to house train him if he is going to be left all day long. You will not be able to feed him 4 meals a day while he is left all day. He will start to chew your home up and bark and cry. If you work all day, do not get a puppy. If you really MUST have a dog, then go to a rescue centre and look for an older dog who may be able to cope with being left, but then rescue centres won't let you have a dog if you are out all day long either. Do you get the message that it isn't right to get a dog and leave it all day long?
Mind you, it's thanks to people like you who get nice dogs, then get rid of them when they cannot cope with them, that I have my 8 lovely dogs who were all from a rescue centre after being got rid of for destroying the houses they were shut in all day long and trashing it.
Could you get a breed I like please so that you can give it to me when you get fed up with it?

Egads... i've got self belief your discomfort! the two considered one of my wee ones - who would be a million twelve months old on the twenty third have been dealing with this on and rancid when you consider that 7-8 months of age. related to the time i think of I certainly have it conquered, something sends one or the different of them freaky lower back. on the Nat'ls interior the 9-12 mos b*tch class totally a million/3 of the b*tches present shied from the choose. This situation is interior the breed in a great way. I had countless long conversations with different breeders on the Nat'ls because it extremely is the 1st time i've got had a controversy with it... there substitute into no consensus on the thank you to handle it. a million/2 thought it substitute into ultimate to depart them abode to advance out of it so as that they did no longer substitute into extra freaky over extra issues. the different a million/2 felt the dogs could be inundated with stimuli so they could only recover from it. i've got been engaged on the 2d ideas-set - so far - no exhilaration on an ongoing foundation. sounds like now the phobia is of the choose interior the hoop - yet everywhere else they are wonderful. different breeders have observed to me that there are not often Berner puppies being shown - and that's for a reason. i'm close to to the component of sending them off for my area to camp for a week or 2 - no longer because of the fact i think of it may treatment them, yet because of the fact I did that with their mom on a extremely ongoing foundation and that i'm questioning if that fluctuate into area of what made her so darned stable. I wish I had a stable answer for you. it extremely is extremely helpful to to evaluate becoming to be a member of the BernerL and asking there.

There are a bunch of things you should know about dog training but we are going to discuss what I feel are some the most important. Keep in mind that these are only some of the things you should know. Go here http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?9Sh1

1. Repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Dogs just like humans learn by doing things over and over in order to get better.

2. Dog Training can and should be fun for both you and your new pet.

3. Training sessions should always be short but sweet. I never work a dog more than 15 minutes in a session to keep from losing the dog's attention. You should train you dog at least once a day but never more than three formal sessions a day.

4. Your goal should be that each training session is just a little bit better than the last one. You need to always strive to make the training better, slowly. I mention this because quite often I see people who do daily training sessions but the dog never gets better and it is not the dogs fault.

5. Having patients is very important in dog training. Losing your temper does not work with a canine it simply makes things worse.

6. Exercise is very important in the training process to get rid of all the dogs nervous energy.

7. Taking your pet for walks is very important because it develops serotonin which gives your dog a feeling of well being.

8. Always be sure to give your dog a bunch of praise in your training. It is your dog's paycheck for doing a great job.

9. Never hit your dog. I have heard people say I never hit my dog instead I roll up a magazine and swat it. It's the same thing... hitting is hitting.

10. After each training session be sure to do something that your dog will enjoy. Take it for a walk, throw the ball or maybe even rub its belly. Just do something that makes the dog look forward to the next training session.

These are things that I teach my dog training students as well as my dog training clients. I hope these things will give you something to think about when training your dog. Spend some time training your dog daily and you will both reap the benefits.

I suggest purchasing the book "Puppies for Dummies". It covers almost every subject imaginable, has training instructions, and even gives lists of games to play with your puppy by age.

Why are you getting a dog when your just going to leave it at home all alone all day locked up? Sounds like a real great life.
