My husband is very sick from food poisoning and wants to know if there is anything he can do to stop vomiting or diarrhea, or at least lessen it somewhat. Also, what can he try to drink that won't upset his stomach to help him with fluid loss? Also, is it possible to have food poisoning without a fever? Thanks!

yes, to no fever...
drink clear liquids only....no milk or dairy. drink sips, like 1 oz every 30 minutes for a few hours then 2 oz every 30 minutes over a few hours....and so on...
clear liquids are gatorade(R), sweet tea, water, popsicles, jello, flat soda....if he continues to vomit and have diarrhea for longer than 24 hours, go to the ED.
onece the vomiting stops, so should the diarrhea. if the diarrhea should turn bloody, then go to the ED immediately.

Yes, you probably want it to run its course, that is I mean the diarrhea and vomiting are getting rid of the poisons. However dehydration is a concern. Probably something like Pedialyte to replace the fluids, but whatever fluids, it should be plenty. No food, it will only exacerbate the problem, maybe broth or jello,
gingerale.. If the situation has not greatly improved by about
48 hours then see the doctor, some food poisonings can be
very very dangerious, others just you just get over.

Food poisoning caused by viruses often present without fever. The truth is, you really shouldn't be trying to stop the nausea and vomiting. Your body is trying to rid itself of the toxins, and stopping it only makes the illness last longer. Of course, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance is always a danger when nausea and vomiting are present together. Ginger ale is often the best tolerated drink for people suffering stomach ailments. It also has some sugar in it to help give your system energy. Be watchful for the signs of dehydration, such as thirst, cracked lips, dry mouth, a smoothness to the tongue, or skin that stays tented after being pinched. If you notice any of these, get to your local emergency room. IV fluid will most likely be needed. There are medication that can stop the vomiting, if needed, such as Phenegran and Compazine.

She may have gotten food poisining. This starts 24 hours after she has eaten the bad food. It also could be the stomach flu. Either way, it is probably something that has to run its coarse. There is nothing they can do at the hospital or dr. office besides possibly giving her something to help with nausia. Keep giving her the pedalyte. It may not keep her from vomiting or having diarrhea but it will help to keep her from getting dehydrated. Give her small sips and tiny bites of crackers. Regardless of what this could be you should call her doctor anyways. It doesnt hurt to see what they want you to do. Good luck. I hope your poor little girl feels better soon.

Food poisoning can last anywhere from 12 hours to several days, depending on the type. He needs to stay away from any drug that will prevent diarrhea. The dairrhea is the body's way of getting the toxins out of his GI tract. Watch for dehydration and take to hospital if he is lethargic, confused, or dehydrated. Lots of clear fluids to keep him hydrated. If he's not recovering at all, IV fluids might be needed.

Food poisoning is usually an infection and so he should get antibiotics and maybe even get tested for gastroenteritis. Plenty of fluids and take up to 8 Imodium tablets a day - that is 2mg capsules. A doctor could prescribe - something like Ciproxin for the infection, codeine phosphate and Imodium to get the diarrhea under control. Fluids and maybe re hydration salts. If he happens to be Russian and he has eaten in a Sushi restaurant in London recently - he should go to hospital.

paregoric (found at druge store) induces vomiting which you would want to get the poison out of system then have him sip lite broth eat small amounts of jello, small amounts of fluids till he is feeling better
knowing he does not want food when he is ready to eat bland food is best on stomach

Ya know calling poison control is really a good idea they know about these things

Sports drinks are the best because they help to rehydrate. I would also suggest an over-the-counter medicine called "Emetrol." I may have the spelling wrong. It comes in a white box with a rainbow on it. It is a liquid and works miracles for stopping the vommitting.
