As x66red66x already said, you probably have carpal tunnel syndrome. If it's up to your shoulders, you've probably had it for quite some time.
When you overuse your hands and/or arms repetitively like assembly line work or craft work such as knitting, the main nerve that runs from your spinal column down your arms will swell. There is an area in your wrist where the nerve has to pass through a tight area caused by the bones coming closer together. With all that swelling, there is no place for it to go outward so the pressure goes inward on the nerve. It pinches it. That's what causes the numbness, tingling, and pain.
When it reaches the point that yours has, rest as well as surgery is usually required. A small incision is made on the underside of your wrist sometimes running slightly into the hand. The surgeon then slits open the sheath a little that covers the nerve to relieve the pinching. A few sutures to close and that's it. It's usually done on an outpatient basis. If it's work related, then worker's compensation will pay for it.

Usually, the first thing people jump to say is that it's carpal tunnel, if you feel this pain in your thumb and first fingers it may be. If you feel this numbness and pain in the pinky, ring and middle fingers and down that same side of the hand, forearm, etc.....I'm going to suggest that it may be your neck.
I am a hairdresser and because I stand with my hands up in front of me, with my shoulders rounded what happens is that the trapezius muscles, upper back and the scalene muscles down the sides of the neck become over developed. Consequently, the nerves that run down the back of the shoulders, arms and into the fingers are pinched. You will feel this pain, numbness, tingling, etc even when sleeping flat on your back.
You will want to contact a pain management, or orthopedic doctor for what is called EMG testing. He will be able to tell you immediately where the problem is coming from. Either way...don't let them cut you!! I get a treatment called Active Release Technique (ART) it works the best, trust me I've had it ALL!!!!!!!! It is easily searched on the internet.
