I bought my house back in May and didn't realise how terrible my neighbours were going to be. They have three kids who go away to their dads at the weekend while they party! Last weekend they started the music at 2.10am and it didn't finish until 10.35am. We did ask them to turn it down but they didn't listen. We then called the police at about 4am and after they came round they didn't change anything but started making threats through the letterbox. Since then, they play music every saturday night and it is really stressing me out and making me ill.

I would play fire with fire and play my music loud but I don't want to upset my neighbour on the other side or risk the chance of threats getting worse.

Does anyone have any advice?

You poor thing. I knew a couple whose neighbours did EVERYTHING full volume, and wouldn't accept retaliation (the husband had a shotgun and shot their cat at one point).

I know it's tempting to turn up the volume when they do, but that can escalate.

The way I see it, you have several options:

1) Endure it - probably not going to work in the long run, unless you have the patience of a saint.

2) Call environmental health; if the noise is over a certain level it becomes a public nuisance and they might be bound over to shut up! - Downside; could still cause friction, but might give you a bit of respite.

3) Call the police, go all out and make yourself as assertive and unpleasant as legally possible, especailly if they're threatening you.

4) Reason with them - doesn't sound like an option in their case, but might be worth considering before getting the heavies in.

5) Have a chat with the rest of the neighbours; chances are they're p*ssed off too and would happily club together. Best not to tackle these people alone if you can help it. The nicer neighbours may be sympathetic to you fighting fire with fire once in a while if they have fair warning and are on your side.

I think your best long-term bet is to get legal on their a$s!

But make sure you've got a decent set of locks, a door-chain and a mesh box behind the letterbox first. :(

I know how wearing bad neighbours can be, I do hope you can get it sorted. Hang in there...

I had a similar problem - luckyly I was renting. I have since moved.

-It is best to avoid confrontations and like-for-like, in case the problem deepens and starts spreading to other areas as well.

-Document the difficulties caused on a diary, being specific on what happened, when, how long it lasted, if you spoke to them about it, their response etc. This will come in handy to prove your point if the situation gets worse and you ask for help from your local council.
If you do not make a diary, the council will not assist you.

-Try to talk to your neighbour in a nice way, tell them how the situation affects your life. Try to keep the spirits up in this conversation and do not let it turn into a moaning, blaming, threatening competition. Be nice, in control, and pleasant.

I understand your situation and feel for you.
I hope it gets better

Making threats through the letterbox? Is that the same as a mailbox (USA)? If so, here, it's a Federal offense to use the mailbox for anything other than US delivered mail. Keep all the threats sent to you and file a police report. If this was the USA, those neighbors could face up to 10 years in prison for mail fraud. Big mistake!

Have a meeting with the other neighbours and get up a petition. Record times. Get a camcorder, as it is the best way of obtaining evidence. I have heard that councils are now going to have the powers of evicting anti-social neighbours even if they own their home. About time too!

Yes contact your local authority because these people are animals. The environmental health officers can help.

Secondly, go to the police NOW because if they shout through your letter box, it is a form of intimidation. Get your complaint in first. These people are a r s e holes and probably known to the police already.

Well just call the police and council every time this happens and also you should consider writing to your local newspaper to name and shame them !.
Eventually the police and council will get so fed up they'll take proper action, and if the newspaper prints the story that will make the police and council work that bit faster to help you sort this out....Good Luck.

Is there possibly a noise ordinance in your area? If not, there is obviously drinking. Report drunk drivers and have a road check. They will get tired of being harassed themselves. Save the threats, you may have to use them later. Make sure that the law is also getting tired of coming to this place for this problem.

If the law failed to guarantee your safety, then you should think about the benefits of storms and thunders. Perhaps, in the beginning you can use some clean cotton for your ears.
An old story saying that we are not angry if we hit an empty boat, but we would never forgive if some people were on it!

Oh my god, you're afraid of your a-hole neighbors' little "threats"? Give the threat notes to the police and let them take care of it. There are probably outstanding warrants for their arrests, so just give the police a reason to check.

Just keep calling the police.
