Function what a big word. I am an engineer. Engineers I know design and supervise the building of things. For example Civil Engineers design and build roads, Structural engineers design and build bridges, building, and things that have to support them selves. As an electrical engineer, I work in automation, I program and design computer controls for machines, and plants.
There are many engineers, chemical, mechanical and more.

Engineering is, believe it or not, a simple job. In its simplest definition, it is the doing of things - primarily to make the world a better place to live in.

As engineers, we use a lot of existing science (physics, chemistry, and biology), mathematics, and common sense to achieve the desired ends. There are two "types" of engineer; the first are those who do well with the maths and sciences and use their talents to research and develop new technologies or new ways of doing things. The second are those who use both old and new technologies to make existing systems safer, more reliable, more profitable, etc.

One way to look at it is that scientists tend to see something and ask "why?" ... an engineer will look at the same thing and ask "how?", or "how better?".

All branches of engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, surveying, forestry, and mechanical) have the same basic requirements as stated above ... it's just that their focus and expertise lie in slightly different areas.

And in case you didn't know it, we're also called "The Sons of Martha", after the poem of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. It's text is appended below.

And the Sons of Mary smile and are blessed – they know the Angels are on their side.
They know in them is the Grace confessed, and for them are the Mercies multiplied.
They sit at the Feet - they hear the Word - they see how truly the Promise runs.
They have cast their burden upon the Lord, and – the Lord He lays it on Martha's Sons!

Engineers also may specialize in one industry, such as motor vehicles, or in one type of technology, such as turbines or semiconductor materials.
