A large factor in the Democrat win during the mid term elections was the management of the war in Iraq by Republicans. Most liberals want a complete and unrestricted removal of all US troops from Iraq. So why then is Charlie Rangel's plan for re-instituting the draft and increasing the number of troops gaining support from liberals?

This was nothing but scare tactics on the part of the Democrats. They feel that if they can frighten you with talk of a draft they will get more votes.

And the really sad thing is that a draft would hurt the poor because the the upper and middle classes are actually over-represented in the military. The idea that the military is for the poor and uneducated is nothing more than more BS from the Democrats.

"Recruits from poorer families are actually underrepresented in the military"

"the number of recruits from wealthier families is increasing"

Even Rangal voted against his own bill. Only two Democrats voted for it. The draft will not be reinstated.
The thought behind the draft is that the poor and working class make up most of the military and that we have very little upper class representation, yet many in the upper classes support the war in Iraq and entering into other wars. Rangal was trying to make a statement when the bill was proposed...very few people are willing to sacrifice their children to war...it's about accountability.

Give it time. Republicans had 6 years, Democrats only have 2 weeks so far.
