Which way shouldit spin in the winter?

It should spin so that the leading edge of the blade is down. This will cause a lifting of the air in the room, instead of actual fanning. All you want is help in mixing the air.

It is said that the fan should blow so the air movement goes towards the ceiling. This pushes the warmer air from the ceiling to the floor.

I never knew that made a difference. Gee. One thing many neglect to do is to dust the blades. That can be very unhealthy , especially in the winter when the windows are shut more. Breathing in all that dust blowing around.

You should have it pulling air, not pushing it, so when you are standing under it you should "NOT" feel it blowing air. This way it pushes the warm air down the outside walls of the room and it doesn't create a cooling affect by blowing on you all the time.

not sure about the whole clockwise counter clockwise part, but you want the lower side of the blade to be leading. This will pull the air up and create circualtion without creating a cooling breeze.
