there is a little plastic switch at the bottom of the rear side of the disc (a bit like that plastic tab you can remove from vhs videos) just make sure the tab is switched and bobs your auntie.

Indeed there is a little tab in the disk corner. if you can see through the hole then the disk is write protected. To stop this just flick back the tab so the hole is obscured. You may have the same problem if the Switch/opto device which senses the hole is jamed or broken so if you close the hole and it still doesn't work you may have a faulty drive. This also goes for the 5 1/4 " disks

You might want to bring up the floppy disc propeties from my computer and see if you actually have 'read and write' access or just 'read only' on that specific disc and again, check the properties of the files on the floppy too if that doesn't work.

That said, it's an awful lot of hassle for only 1.4MB of space on an unreliable medium, try an online service such as BOX.net for file backups, you don't sound like you'll need any of the 'pro' features so the 1GB free account will be fine.

If you're just wanting to destroy the data you could just pull the disc appart and take the magnetic tape disc and cut it up or burn it if you want to be completely secure.
