She has always been very skittish, as she was hit by a car as a puppy. She is active and eating normally. She still brings her toy to play and cuddles as she always does, but her tail has been unusually droopy for the past couple of days. Any ideas?

What I find when my dogs droop their tails it is usually because they are upset or afraid about something.

I don't know about the dislocation thing.

How long has it been since she was hit by the car? If you live on a busy street she might be hearing tires squealing, which bring back memories of being hit. That can be worring her and make her afraid.

Best of luck. Also you might think about having her checked by vet to make sure there is no medical problem with her.

The tail of a dog, any dog, is like a barometer telling us how they feel. When the tail is between the legs, they are showing submission. When it is carried high (even when wagging slightly) it means they are alert and dominant.
If your dog's tail is sagging it could indicate an emotional adjustment to some situation she is facing.
Have there been any significant changes in her environment (new dog, new baby, big change of some kind?) then you're dog's tail is only indicating her adjustment.
If you coddle her during this phase, it could only reinforce her insecurity. I encourage you to take her for some nice and fun walks - you know the places she will like best. This is positive reinforcement at it's best and your pup's tail will soon be flagging again.

If she does not seem to be in pain when you touch or handle it, she may have impacted anal glands. Even more likely if she is over weight. A vet can check & express them if so, and teach you how to do so for the future (if you are not bothered by doing so & want to avoid the vet trips). It could be broken or dislocated. You might want to get her to a vet. My dog dislocated her tail by the "dog chasing tail" fun - it was easy to see she was in pain.

is it swollen? is she having a hard time moving it? if you answered yes to these questions then you need to take her to the vet. it might have an injury or possibly an insect bite (spider).

If she recently had a bath or went swimming, she might have cold water tail.
