The two most common ways to bet are either straight up betting or betting against the spread.
Straight up is easy. This is just who you think will win. If you pick the winning team you win the bet. You will have to pay double whatever they gave you. So $5 would be $10.

You can also bet against the spread. This is the prediciton on who vegas is choosing to win and by how many points. This makes it so every game is bettable. Like we know an NFL team would crush a college team and the spread was created so even if though a team is a major favorite you can still bet on the game. How this works is a team will be favored by a certain amount of point. I think the patriots are favored by 3 points. So a Giants win or if they lose by only 2 it makes the person who picked the Giants win. If the patriots win by more than 3 then whoever picks the patriots win. If they win by exactly 3 points then it is a push. Normally you would just give them back whatever they put in and nothing more. To avoid this make the tiebreaker either whoever gets closest to picking the finals score, or the total amount of points scored.

Football betting - the odds are so small that you are forced to go for long shots - the thing about long shots is they are bloody unlikely.
If you have a stash of cash then go for short odds, but, it is indeed a "funny old game". Actually no, don't bet on the footie.
If you need money - and you are disciplined - then online poker is the best odds (not playing other people, the machine games) they hold for you so there's no need to know much about poker. They have a 99% plus payout rate in many cases (tey ladbrokes casino multi-hand).
BUT you have to know when to bank and not be reckless.
If you do bank properly it's hard to lose. Seriously.
Me? I never bank at the right time, I get carried away.

I wouldn't bet on the football but choosing a football GAME to bet on could be a choice. Since you need the money why waste it gambling where the odds are ALWAYS against you. No free lunch, buddy. Get a part time job 'til you get on your feet.

NO Definitely not,

The reason I say this is because I work in a bookmakers and see the misery and debt gambling can cause. Remember!! The only winner is the bookie.

Betting is a sucker's pipe dream. Work for it, instead of losing it.
