You brother is wrong. The telephone system will recognize dial pulses, as well as Dual tone Multi Frequency, which is what touch tone is. I collect and service vintage phones, so I know.

Most places have a modern digital system (works on tones rather than pulses) so the old spin dial phones may not work. You can get 'retro' ones that have been converted to use on a modern system, but they cost a bomb and have none of the useful features modern handsets have.
You can also get ones that look old (round number pad, big head-piece, but you push the numbers instead of dragging them) but they're a bit cheesy.
In a nutshell, unless you have an authentic period house with period furniture etc, I wouldn't bother.
After reading answers above, an old one may work fine, but you still pay as much for a cr@ppy old one as you would for a decent new one. I got a cordless that reads the phonebook from my mobile sim card and does texts etc for about £80

It is true the old dial phone will not work well - with all the call centres the "if you want this press 1 or that press 2" will not work with a dial phone.

valid assumptions, since most phones are push button and not dial anymore. it will work. but you may have some problems in the fact if you need to call a certain company and you have to enter the extension numbers etc that you need or if you have voice mail. if you have a secondary phone that is push button in the house then there should be no problems.

yes and no they make new rotary dial phones that send out tone instead of pulse. Or you can tell the telephone company to allow your line to use pulse dialing also. Course they might charge you for it.

Pathfinder is correct, however if it's a very old phone the high impedance coil in the phone may prevent you from using another (push button) phone elsewhere in your house. This coil can be changed though. ( I guess that is what pathfinder does??)
