Do not hit your dog or rub his nose in his waste. Both are cruel. You have to TRAIN the dog to go outside. Since it is a male it will be easier if he is neutered. Since he is older use the 3-4 month rule here. The first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. A rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. When your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. When the pup does it's thing outside praise it. a lot. Tell the pup how good, how smart it is. You have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it's spot" behavior. When you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. If you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. If you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit.... yourself in the head and say "I should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. Night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. Also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. Good luck

You would never hit your kids well NEVER NEVER hit a dog..I have two wonderfull dogs, more like my kids..and the best way to train them to go potty outside...as soon as they wake-up ..out they go..and if you catch him drinking out they go..if you see him laying there panting outside right away..As for the places he does go in the house a mixture of vinagar and tabasco sauce should take care of the smell..Even javex can leave traces of where he went and now that he marked his place he will be more prone to go there. If he is going while you are gone to work maybe you can run home on your lunch to let him out and while you are gone you can put him in a home kennel ..although they are expensive enough to purchase ..you have to ask yourself if replacing a thousand dollar carpet or a kennel..He is allready a year old and his bladder has no retainning trainning yet because he has allways just gone when needed. so it may take some time. But be patient with you pet and show him love ..scaring him into obedience will get you nowhere in the long run.

Don't rub his nose in it! Dogs don't really understand that and it's just nasty (how would you like to have your nose rubbed in your excrement if you had an accident? You wouldn't do it to a toddler, don't do it to a dog.) You can only "discipline" the dog if you catch him in the act. If you do catch him, simply say "NO" (sternly, but no need to scream and yell) and take him outside to show him where you want him to go.
If the problem is occuring while you are gone, you can try crate training the dog. This helps him to have his own "place" and he will be less likely to "go" in his own place.
You also have to be sure to clean any accidents very well...there are special cleaners available that can get rid of the smell (it rids the smell so that even dogs can't smell it). If the dog can smell it in a spot, he may keep going there.
Be sure that the dog isn't ill in any way (including bladder infections, etc).
Hope this helps.

You need to praise loads when he does go outside. Another reason why he is going to the toilet in the house, is to mark his territory. To stop this problem castration may be needed. You may also need to start a retinue, so it knows what will be happening next.

watch Bruce almighty.
He brought the house outside !
is there a rug that the dog always goes for?
If so bring the dog and the rug out side. When he goes to pee on the rug you move it and he will go without it !!

Do you leave a bowl of water out for him?
Well if you do then this might be the reason he likes to pee all the time try ice cubes in a bowl. Also take him out as much as possible.
Don't rub his nose in it that's just sad.
He will get the idea it just takes time.....:o)
