get the car checked out to make sure its in very good condition.
take a credit card.
pack several snacks and sandwiches and water. this will save $$ on food.
flashlight, ,jumper cable,2 spare tires, tools to change a flat tire, cell phone charger, cell phone, change for tolls, lots and lots of cds, books on cd,

pack everything like two nights before and check it every time i can. then i make sure of the finances
