As a rule girls mature faster than boys so to keep up with themselves they need to be with someone older.

Two reasons (which genetically may end up actually being the same reason):

1: For most of humanity's history, the male was the "provider". You get to be a
better provider by having been out in the work force (or having hunted
for awhile). That is, a certain amount of age is an advantage. The woman's
function was biologically available earlier than the male's. That is, a woman
can safely give birth by her mid teens (biologically, mind you, not socially,
particularly not in today's day-and-age). A guy isn't usually a very good
food provider until his late teens or early 20s. An 18 year old male makes
a very good provider for a 15 year old pregnant woman. The younger
the woman is when she first starts giving birth, the more children she
can have which is genetically a HUGE advantage to both genders.

That is, from the woman's point of view, the guy is basically an infinite
source of semen, whenever she needs it - so its age isn't that important.
From the man's point of view, the woman's eggs are available over a
pretty limited period of time and its in his own gene's interest to take
full advantage of the time available.

2: Women mature socially faster then men, mostly because they spend
the first years of their lives working on their social skills while guys
tend to work more on physical skills (useful for hunting). An 18 year
old girl will find a 15 year old boy pretty childish, but an 18 year old
boy is more likely to find a 15 year old girl at least sexy, and perhaps
also socially interesting.

These reasons are historical based on genes and biology. The only
problems that they cause now have to do with what society expects and how
quickly one mate will become bored with the other. That is, a 40 year old guy
may find a 17 year old sexy and visa versa, but what other than sex
will they talk about? The same is true for the the "Mrs. Robinson"
complex of guy woman being signficantly older than the guy.

Remember, biologically speaking, a woman invests a lot more to spread
her genes than a guy does. Guys can theoretically have hundreds of
thousands of children whereas the practicalities of gestation keep the
absolute maximum number of children a woman can have from 10 to 20.
That ratio becomes even less fair when you go back a few hundred
years and women were dying off in their 40s - and child birth was so
likely to cause maternal death.

Modern technology makes this less true, but it doesn't completely
eliminate the ticking clock.

females are emotional and the guy needs to be a little matured so maybe the age gap actually helps in him being more patient.
or
probably females are very beautiful and guys are quite mean so they always marry younger wifes as they love them a lot.
or
probably because of the kids, U know the guy is the one who leaves the world early later followed the wife so theres someone with their kids. I was told this during my visit to a village in India.

About problems, nope there wont be any problems as long as both the husband and wife love each other and are working to make the marriage a success.
What matters is both are happy and both are keeping each other happy, forget the age.

it is generally percieved that women tends to mature (mentally) early than men of their same age group, this is the reason why husbands are generally elder than their wives.

But this is not a rule and there are varied exceptions to the norm. The idea is that there will be problems in any marriage, but to basically blame it on age difference is wrong, the conflicts arise due to the diffrent maturity levels, different perceptions, and what not.

because men are interested in committing a little later than women, and women are a little more interested in a financially/career stable guy.

no problems, my mom is a few years older than my dad and i am older than my last 2 boyfriends. it depends on compatibility factors unique to the two people.

It has been a tradition. Male dominance. Now a days, it does not matter at all.
