Oxygen was discovered for the first time by a Swedish Chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in 1772. Joseph Priestly, an English chemist, independently, discovered oxygen in 1774 and published his findings the same year, three years before Scheele published. Antonie Lavoisier, a French chemist, also discovered oxygen in 1775, was the first to recognize it as an element, and coined its name "oxygen"

Oxygen (Greek, oxyx=sharp; gen=born) is a colorless, odorless, active gas.
Discovered independently by Priestley and Scheele in 1774 and was known to the chemists of the 18 century as "dephlogisticated air".
Oxygen is the most abundant element making up 88.8% of the waters of the earth, 46% of the rocks and soils and one-fourth of the atmosphere by weight or one-fifth by volume.
All plant and animal life as we know it, depends on oxygen for its existence.
