I believe that the desire to help someone is a subtle expression of ego or self pride. By helping someone we feel superior, we think we have achieved something. This is one of the reasons why elders all the time offer help and advice to youngsters even without being asked for. Similarly, a successful person believes it is his earned right to give unsolicited advice to others not so successful.

Keeping another alive, mentally and physically by being a positive presence when they need you. By a positive presence I mean catering to their mental and physical needs so that they are sustained in life.By being something to them rather than a nothing. The mental sustenance is so that they do not become emotionally negative.(Anger, depression, fear, boredom, loneliness etc.) The physical needs are basic physical necessities for life. Scientists have been trying to understand nothingness for years. There is no such thing as nothing! For if you ever succeed in finding nothing you will soon realize there is something. It will be you and you will be God and have to create a universe out of nothing to keep from going mad with loneliness. If you believe in God hopefully he will be there in that "nothingness" to help you just as the vacuum energy is there in the nothingness of intergalactic space-time. "No man is an island."

A duty.
The rule of life. It's our responsibility to do for others as we would have done to us. To pass by someone in need is tantamount to failure of one's own humanity. "No snowflake feels responsible for the avalanche".
I believe we do more damage to ourselves, if we fail to help someone whom we are able to help.
Even if we can't be the one helping it's important to connect a person with the means of assistance.

I believe helping someone is, being there when they need someone to talk to, not give advice but just listening to them.
Helping someone could also mean, having them stay over when there is no where else to go.
Just being there friend, someone to lean on!!!

It is cooperating with someone to relieve part of or all of a certain burden or responsibility that he/she carries, be it physical, mental, material etc etc on the condition that there will be no personal benefit from doing so.

It's different for everyone. For example, you will know what it means to you as soon as you've had enough of me.
