Not sure but I think it was an elvolution from early tribal customs. Most royals have their own money and holdings. The reason they exist is that they draw attention away from the real power. The politicians use them as cover so the public don't go nosey into their dealings. Royals provide cover for their screw ups and back door deals.

Royalty has existed since we gave up wandering the hills and plains and settled into communities !! Once upon a time they WERE the governance and protectors (and in most cases still ARE).

Their "obsolescence" as absolute monarchs has in most cases led to Constitutional Monarchies... with the Royal as a figurehead and State Leader with the functions of government accomplished by an elected legislature or Parliament.

Just using the British Royal Family as the example, THEY actually cost the Kingdom very little...Monies to support the Queen in the exercise of her duties as head of state (the Head of State Expenditure) of the United Kingdom come from the Civil List; a return of a small portion of the revenue from the Crown Lands that are surrendered by the Monarch to Parliament at the beginning of each reign, all Crown Land being administered by The Crown Estates, an institution answerable to parliament. In the 2003-04 fiscal year the amount surrendered was £176.9 million, where the Head of State Expenditure was £36 million. The Head of State Expenditure does not include the cost of security.

Also, HRH pays taxes on her income and capital gains !

Just IMAGINE The LOSS in revenue England would suffer if they absolved the Monarchy !!

Your assumption that royals "cash in on taxes for free" may not be true. I believe, for example, that the U.S. Presidency costs a great deal more to maintain than modern monarchies.

People like traditions. Most royal families are living monuments to a nation's history. Also, royal families tend to be fairly wealthy in their own right (for historical reasons), so you wouldn't really "dissolve" them. You could remove all state-sactioned support... but unless you went all Soviet on them they still be a wealthy family that considered itself royalty.

They were out there for a purpose that we don't know why?
So "Let it Be"
We have enough of living in misery blindly throwing away our creator's universal gifts of life.
It seem we ran out of things to throw but to kick the butts of the royal families too?
Just let them be.

But royal watching is so much fun, it keeps the newspapers and television shows in business.
