A modem is a device who's basic function is to convert digital signals to analog signals & viceversa. This is the basic function followed by a computer and a modem to run internet. modems are of two types (1.) INTERNAL (2.) EXTERNAL .. An internal modem is one which is fixed in a slot on your computer's motherboard, like the RAM card & external modem is connected to the "USB" port or the "SERIAL" port of the computer. Digital signals is the signal used by our computers. Analog signals are used to carry our messages over the telephone lines and as we know that internet operates through our telephone lines therefore to convert signals (as mentioned above) modems are used.

Modulator, demodulator.
A modem (from modulate and demodulate) is a device that modulates an analogue carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information.
The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data.

I think you mean "watt". You need many watts and volts to run a modem, which is a device used for telecommunication.
