Because they are strategically placed. Just when you decide that maybe you should have stopped at that last rest stop to go to the bathroom and maybe you can't hold it for the next 189 miles, bingo there's the "Authorized Vehicles Only" sign. That's also when you realize that maybe you shouldn't have had all that coffee on your own, and think maybe it would have tasted better if you'd shared it.

So funny...I have used them quite freely, actually. If it's late and night and no one is on the road and I miss an exit, do you think I'm going to go anothe 892 miles 'til I can find another exit? Not on your life. Take the cut across and take it quick.
Same thing works in the daytime too...lol
Make no mistake, I hold traffic laws in high regard...***spit take***

In Texas, we in our stereotypical Bigfoot Trucks, take the "Texit"...that's where you just veer off and cross the grassy/muddy stretch from the Interstate to the feeder, when you missed the designated exit.

You just need to get a note off your Mum to use them
I have one in my wallet, if the police do stop me, I produce the note and they are happy to leave me there then.
