communicate a system to other in the lan how the name resolving occurs. the lan has no dns or wins server.

u have assigned IP address..TCP\IP will resolve computer names

In addition to TCP/IP, have client for Microsoft Networks turned on. This is what actually resolves PC names with the IP address.

Make sure that all are members of the same workgroup. If you run the network setup wizard on each, state that you connect through hub with others, and to turn on file/printer sharing.

Control Panels: Folder options: In the view tab, check to auto search for net folders and printers, and turn off simple file sharing if you want to define specific folder shares. In firewall, allow exceptions, which should only be file/printer sharing.

If you found confusing using pc by names then keep a practise to recognise them by ip address. which resolves your problem in communicating

Perhaps it is using the "hosts" file. Look for it in,

\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
