4cyl. 5 speed auto Can it be set to any mileage that I want? How often should I change my oil/filter? I live in NW Ohio, flat land. Get 31+mpg. Use 5w30 oil.
40% city, 55% highway, 5% idle. Rarely a heavy foot, gas or brake. Oil companies say 3K miles, Manual says 5K miles. Use a Lucas Product in both the oil and the gas. How about putting in an Air Hog air filter? Much of a problem on this car to do that. Keep tires aired at 29psi.. Alignment and Balance kept up. Garaged at night,(unheated). Use Rain X on the windows. Car waxed 3 times a year. One Mature Driver,(trucker). Never had an accident. Don't scrape curbs. Any GOOD info will be appreciated. Happy Holidays to ALL!!!

the light for the oil change has nothing to do with mileage. It is set up through the computer. It takes in the data such as haw many times the car starts and shuts off. Crank revolutions. Speed. And many other conditions. It can not be changed because like i said it is not a mileage thing. Also you should go by the manual not the oil companies or changers.

Resetting the light is very easy on these cars.
Turn the key to the lock or ACC position with the odometer reading showing.
Turn the key to the on position while holding down the trip meter reset button for atleast 5 seconds. The odometer should read all zeros and the light should go off. If you didn't do it right, it will keep flashing.
You cannot set it to any mileage you want. I believe it comes on every 4,500 miles.
I would personally change the oil every 5,000 miles. With the current technology in oil filters & additives in oil, It is an absolute waste to change oil every 3K miles with normal driving. I'm an Amsoil retailer and have been using Amsoil synthetics for years in about 10+ vehicles and I change my oil every 10K. This doesn't include the 25+ of my customers that run it and love it. I change theirs every 7500 miles. My MB customers oil is changed every 10K-13K, which is the proper invervals, but they are on a special European Formula. If you are driving like a sane person, which I'm sure you are, 5K will be just fine. If you drive like you are on a race course with basically the throttle max and off the entire trip, then I would change it every 3K.

It should be in the owners manual under the "Do it Yourself Maintenance" section. If it is the same as the '05 Toyota Matrix it is done by turning on the key then pressing in the odometer button on the dash (it has to be reading the total mileage). Hold it in and start the car, keep holding it in and you should see a line appear and it will disappear on section at a time until the light clears. Then U R done. Only takes about 10 seconds.
Later!

as for what chaney said, this may be your option. toyota has a couple ways of resetting it and this may be the one for your vehicle however consulting your owners manual can confirm this.
alternatively you can call just about any valvoline instant oil change and ask them, when i worked there id always let people know. if they say no... ask them if you can speak with a manager and ask why they aren't following the "car care aware" program.
as for your intervals yes almost all auto parts stores, independent mechanics, and oil change shops recommend 3k miles, with vehicles that have an oil change light in 02 or newer follow the light. uses sensors and computer calculations to map out the best time for an oil change. chevy ranges from 2k miles to 9k miles. toyota from 2k to 7k depending on what the sensors put out.............. OIL CHANGE LIGHT KNOWS BEST lol

Close, but not quite. Make sure the odometer is showing Trip A, not odometer, then turn key off. Push and hold the reset button in then turn ignition key on, Number of mileage will turn into slashes which will extinguish themselves one after the other. When number of miles comes back, it is done.

call the dealer for oil reset,or look in your book....i change oil every 5000 miles. with a carburetor it needed change 3 thou. because of cylinder washing but fuel injected cars don't ever run over rich. If you are using synthetic oil u can drive 7500 mi. before change.

If you can't find the answer in your owners manual then I would try disconnecting your positive/nagative battery cables and then reconnecting them. By doing that it will clear any code in your computer. Of coarse you will have to reset the clock and all of your favorite radio stations again.

if its what i suspect, then its like the BMW types, you have to get it to the service center, they have a special plug they put in somewhere in the engine after they have done an oil change, That will reset everything
