My computer has had no problems before there was a blackout or power surge around my area and now my two CD drives aren't being recogonised, and also my computer is much much slower and sometimes the computer fans in my system fail to work. Does anyone know what could be the problem.

I thought the problem might have been from excess electricity running through and it might have to change my motherboard, but not sure about that.

If you are ready to put your hands on then, try to open the tower casing and pluck out the power cables from both the CD drives and then off all the main. Also plug out the main cable that is plugged on the motherboard. Leave it for a while then try to connect and it should work. If this does not help then, restart your PC and go into your BIOS setup and set the settings to default and try this should work.

Change the CD ROM drives. If the new ones are working, then the CD ROM or their cables are at fault. If these are not working, then the cables or the IDE port on the motherboard is faulty. Change the cables and you will localise the problem. If the motherboard is faulty, then, change the motherboard and donot worry about the fan.

i would try to replace the easy stuff first. the ribbon cable behind the drives pulls out and is replaced for a buck or two...also the ribbon between the hard drive and the board. if that doesnt fix it the power supply is next. if that doesnt fix it..the memory is nominal...if that doesnt fix it, more than likely its major repairs...i use a gas surge protector and a power strip...make sure you use a virus checker and adaware to insure the problem isnt unrelated to the surge. good luck.
