Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route from Europe to India. He left Lisbon with four ships on 8 July 1497 and arrived in India 20 May 1498. Only two ships returned to Lisbon in September 1499. He was 38 year old. They faced serious opposition by the Muslim traders in the East African coast and in Calicut (modern Kozhikode). They also encountered problems on trading with the Indians because they failed to bring any trade goods of interest. During the voyage they suffered from disease, mainly scurvy, due to a diet lacking in vitamin C. Only 54 of 170 voyagers survived. One of the dead was Paulo da Gama, Vasco da Gama's brother. The voyage was the final step of the Portuguese crown to gain access to the very profitable spices' trade which was then in Muslim and Mediterranean (Venice) hands.
