There is an Irish tradition that the foxes on the large estate of a particular family gathered around the "big house" when the head of the family was about to expire. The family were noted fox hunters and they claimed that this was a mark of mutual respect from the foxes.

Dogs may howl when another dog dies if they understand what death is. I doubt they would have anyway of knowing when a person dies. Even if they did know would they have any reason to howl? I thank not. Sometimes they just howl at the moon. Thew dogs are probably the smartest animals other than human, dogs just aren't that bright. Kisses Betty.

Maybe, but sometimes they just howl for fun! My dog is mostly husky (which is the closest to a wolf) and he howls to other dogs and especially to fire sirens and church bells!
