In the 70's I remember reading it in an Archie comic and thinking oh wow! But I've forgotten now and would like a reminder. Thank you! Doesn't it have to do with a girl?

From that Wikipedia link!

"In live-action Archies television program, Archie and Reggie attempt to find out Jughead's real first name. They go to the school office, and a woman there tells them that Jughead's real first name is Steve. After Archie and Reggie leave the office, the audience learns that the woman is actually Jughead's aunt and that she has just lied to Archie and Reggie as a favor to Jughead to help him cover up the fact that his first name is Forsythe."

She lied!! Now - no guesses to the S? His name is Forsythe P Jones. The P stands for Pendleton.

found this on archiecomics.com:

For 60 years, the perennial love triangle between Archie, Veronica, and Betty still exists, the meaning of the "S" on Jughead's shirt still remains a mystery, and Archie is still running afoul into different adventures, much to the heart-warming delight of a new generation of grateful readers, their parents, and their parents' parents.

it seems it doesnt stand for anything, sorry...

I always thought it stood for 'Sweater'-- Jughead isn't a jock, and maybe he was poking fun at them.

He WAS on the Riverdale High basketball team for a season, but he did poorly on court, so the coach dropped him from the team. Maybe that was where he got it. I don;'t recall the name of their team.

Juggy never had much to do with girls. (Some people read unwarranted assumption into that, but the letter doesn't have to do with a girl.) In the classic Return to Riverdale, the tenth reunion of Archie's graduating class, Jughead had been married and, unhappily, divorced. He was still trying to avoid Big Ethel at the time of the reunion, but went for her in a big way when she turned out to have become a glamorous fashion model. So he IS normal, after all.

Hope this answers your question.

Archie comics were great until they launched the TV series to coincide with the Sugar Sugar single, which was originallly written for the Monkees. It was a great song, but the series really sucked. Especiaaly Jughead's voice.

The "S" was from his old high school before he transferred to Riverdale. He came from Springfield, but the State was never mentioned. LOL Maybe he went to school with Homer Simpson.
