You need some sort of operating system - Windows XP or Linux but you can remove some of the Office components that you don't use to save space. Just re-run the install programme and select how you want to use each component - eg, Excel / Word / Powerpoint etc... You can select that you run these from the CD.. That can save some disk space.

You may be able to put some of your data on another computer or back it up on a cd or dvd disk. Then remove this data from your hard drive.
As the other answerer said, you still need Windows on your lap top, as Office XP will not be able to run otherwise.
Another thing you may be able to do, buy and get a new hard drive installed in your lap top. This may not be cost effective, so you may have to buy a new lap top and transfer the data from this lap top onto the new lap top.
If none of these options sound appealling, and I do not think they will, you could use a Windows facility.
- Click on the 'Start' menu.
- Click on 'All programs'.
- Look for 'Accessories', it is usually towards the top f the list.
- Click on 'Accessories', another list / menu should appear.
- Look for 'System Tools'.
- Click on 'System Tools', another list / menu should open.
- Click on 'Disk Cleanup'.
This program may take a long time to start up. When it eventually appears, select these options.
- 'Downloaded Program Files'
- 'Temporary Internet Files'
- 'Temporary files'
This last option I would not usually recommend it, but in your situation it may help.
- 'Compress old files'
Then press the 'Ok' button. Once again this may take a long time to complete. The window will just disappear, and you will get no notification that the process finished.
Last, but not least, make sure your Recycle Bin has no files in it. Make sure it is empty.

you could try running linux with a windows emulator, but you do need an operating system of some sorts. if the problem is simply that you are running out of space on the hard drive you could try uninstalling programs that you don't use, or even remove some parts of the operating systems installation ( like the games etc )

1. Delete all rubbish you've got (MP3, videos, porn, movies, jokes and any other crap you thought it might be useful to save).
2. Right-click on the Internet Explorer desktop icon, then properties. Then delete all temporary internet files.
3. Go to control panel. Add remove programs. Uninstall any software YOU DONT REALLY NEED. Dont keep software you thought you would use sometime in your life.
If this doesnt work then:
1. Get a new hard drive with bigger capacity or
2. Get a new laptop/desktop with bigger capacity
Another tip:
When saving images, pictures or photos save them as JPEG, not BMP. This saves more than 70% space.
Dont forget to mark my answer as the best if this was any useful ;)
Cheers

You need to run a proogram called "disc cleanup".
It is listed under "all programs -> accessories -> system tools" and is a standard part of windows XP.
This will locate files which can be safely deleted and free some disc space.
