There's no physical difference between USB 1.0 and USB 2.0 The only difference is the transfer speed. You can connect a USB 1.0 drive to USB 2.0 port and vice versa. If you connect a USB 2.0 drive to USB 1.0 port then the max transfer speed is same as USB 1.0 max speed. If you connect a USB 1.0 drive to USB 2.0 port you still got the max USB 1.0 speed. Hope this will help. Good luck.

Definitely, the speed is much greater, according to the below specifications, speed is 320 times faster:
* USB 1.0: Released in January 1996.
Maximum speed of 1.5 Mbps (now called Low-Speed). Does not allow for extension cables or pass-through monitors (due to timing and power limitations). Few such devices actually made it to market.
* USB 1.1: Released in September 1998.
Added higher maximum speed of 12 Mbps (now called Full-Speed). Fixed problems identified in 1.0. Earliest revision to be widely adopted.
* USB 2.0: Released in April 2000.
Added higher maximum speed of 480 Mbps (now called Hi-Speed). Current revision.
However, you DO need to use a USB 2.0 compatible device to get full use of the speed. A USB 1.0 device will work in a USB 2.0 enabled socked, but will only run at USB 1.0 speeds.
Also there are some new connector sizes available for USB 2.0 that weren't in the USB 1.0 spec:
From the original USB specification:
* Series "A" plug
* Series "A" receptacle
* Series "B" plug
* Series "B" receptacle
Added in USB 2.0 specification:
* Mini-B plug
* Mini-B receptacle
Added in the On-The-Go Supplement to the USB 2.0 Specification:
* Mini-A plug (white)
* Mini-A receptacle (white)
* Mini-AB receptacle (grey)

Yes indeed the connectors are the same but the speeds are totaly different. USB1 only goes upto 12Mbps where as USB2 can go upto 480Mbps a 40* speed increase!!
Some things to remember are :
Some Suppliers call USB1.1 USB2 since it sounds nice but its still only 12Mbps
USB2 extenders are more epensive and go for shorter distances than USB 1 for example I have a 45M USB1 extender but only a 5M USB2 !
Some implementations of USB2 are poor requiring high CPU overhead so you don't really get all of that 480Mbps or if you do only one channel of it
if you stick a USB 1 device in a hub with USB2 devices it slows them all down to USB1 speed....DOH!!!

I've found that USB 2 runs much faster than USB 1. My printer certainly runs faster than when it was connected parallel.

Besides the difference in speed of the two types of ports, there r certain accessories which run only on usb2 and not usb1.

USB2 is considerably faster, like firewire.
If you have a USB1 device, it will work with a USB2 port, but a USB2 won't work in a USB1 port.

Speed but they look the same. This is because of backwards compatibility
