We've tried those plug in ultrasonic things, and don't think they work very well.
The thing is that they need clear line of sight to work, so if there is anything at all that blocks the ultrasonic emissions like furniture etc., then these things are as useful against mice and rats as a little red light in the corner of the room. The problem is that in the kitchen (where you'd most likely have a problem with rats/mice), socket outlets are only either above the kitchen worktops, or in the corner (behind the fridge). Neither of these locations are good for providing an unobstructed power points for these things.
We've also heard from a friend that she's found mouse droppings on top of one of these things - I suppose mice do have a sense of humour.
The thing with mice and rats is to always be on your guard. Traps and poison can help, but they're not the solution as mice and rats reproduce at such a rate that you'll be forever putting traps and poison down to kill them. Keep the house as tidy as possible, sweep up any and all spills/crumbs as soon as they happen and don't leave food out unprotected. Look out for any holes in floorboards, etc. that they may crawl in from (especially if you're in a block of flats or a tenement where the mice/rats could be nesting in the flat below/above and come through to your flat to find food/nesting material), and block them. Patch up what you can with ply or the likes, and if possible, stuff the gaps with steel wool (that they can't chew through).
Good luck!

Okay this is gonna sound weird but it totally works. We have a seirous problem with rats and mice because we live right in front of a golf course and this was the ONLY thing (after almost 8 years of trying) that got rid of them. You need to buy pure peppermint oil (you can find them in a herbal store) and place one or two drops on cotton balls. Then scatter them all over your house, in corners, by beds, behind couches EVERYWHERE. Trust me it will smell like peppermint for about two days. But for some reason they can't stand the smell, and they will all leave and no new ones will come back. We do this process about once every six months or so. We haven't seen any since and we use to spot them daily. THe only thing that convinced me to try is when I walked in to the herbal store and ask for peppermint oil they asked "the one for headaches or the one for rats" lol good luck and I really hope you try it!

yes. there are. there is rat poison. which u can mix with food and scatter it near their dwelling. but u hav to be careful not to leave any uncovered food in your kitchen, or cupboards, as the poison may stick to the rat's hair and go to your food when these rats ran around the house especially around the kitchen. there's is also this sticky paper for flies but u can use to catch rats or mice. i use this but i guard it from time to time.when a mice gets stuck in the paper, i immediately wrap the mouse with that sticky paper and throw them or bury it. hope this helps.
