Well when you design a web site when you rejister it you surley need to pay a amount to the network. At that time they have many sponsers to garentee that there site would work nicely after these assurances the particular sponsers adds are been put on the site for which they need to pay
Another path is the unsuccessful sites are forced to give there adds on these successful site.
So they are always in profit

Majority of free email providers get their profits from banner advertisments you see in the sides of your monitor. Others use pop-up advertising which generally drives people away more than banner ads.

Advertising. Most free email providers have advertising scattered around the user interface, earning themselves money and advertisers exposure every time you access your mail.

Advertising and the ability to ensure that you get you their spam/sales e-mails directly. :-)
Then once you start using their e-mail system you feel "stuck" since you have passed that email out to people... then they sell you a larger size mailbox.

They use a lot of banner ads & ads in email messages, so the ads & premium services would probably be my guess for it.

I dunno the gory details, but, to put it in one word it is advertisements. The ads that you see when you log in and the ones that are splashed all over the website fetch a lot of money for the site. I dunno how much, but I know it is a lot.
