I have noticed this in many countries, America, Germany, Thailand... What's the point of it?

Isn't the siren and the lights more efficient than that? I mean it takes more time to read that than registering the siren in you brain.

SORRY, i grew up and still live in thailand. In this country you don't really see ambulances very often. That's why i've never had one behind me on the road. Makes sense though.

In many areas there is so much noise on the road, and with people having their car stereos turned up and thumping (see some of the questions here in the car audio section), emergency vehicles need all the tools that they can have to get peoples attention. Having the word "Ambulance" visible in someones rear view mirror is just another tool.

Yes - I agree with your point. If someone has time to look in their rearview mirror and read the entire word "ambulance" without noticing the big flashing lights or siren.... something is wrong.

I think that the use of various medical symbols has grown more popular (i.e. red crosses) - these allow for an instantaneous verification of what the vehicle is. I suspect that the practice of writing ambulance developed at a time when ambulances were much slower.

Thats because you can read it properly from your rearview mirrow when you see an ambulance behind u.. If it were to be written correctly then you may not be able to understand it when you look thru the rear view mirror. :)

It enables road users to see the word ambulance when it is coming from behind.

So the drivers of cars ahead of an ambulance can read the word "AMBULANCE" in their rear view mirror.

when you hear siren approaching you from behind and you look in your mirrors, you can read "ambulance"! Knowing to then yield to an emergency vehicle.

it's wrong way around because when you're ahead you see the world correctly in your rear view mirror and move away so the ambulance can pass you.
